Artificial Eye Implants
Orbital Implants

Genetics, disease, trauma or injury often affect the eyes causing great concern about how we will function, especially when an eye is lost. Artificial eye implants have been in use for thousands of years successfully, but the first orbital implant was developed about 100 years ago using spheres of glass or gold. These were later replaced by plastic or silicone.  As remarkable as these implants were, they still looked and acted artificial without natural movement. Today’s advanced artificial eye implants can create a more natural looking appearance – so natural, in fact, you’ve probably met or seen someone who has one, but were unaware that the person had an artificial eye.  Dr. Cole employs the Bio-Eye Hydroxyapatite Orbital Implant which is the implant of choice by leading Oculoplastic Surgeons worldwide.

BENEFITS OF ORBITAL IMPLANTS:

  • Orbital Implants have been in use since 1985 after years of research
  • Orbital Implants are used by over 25,000 people worldwide
  • Orbital Implants reduce migration and prevent lower eyelid drooping
  • Orbital Implants allow for natural eye motion, even darting movements
  • Orbital Implants become a living body part due to tissue acceptance
  • Orbital Implants are made from natural materials the body accepts
  • Orbital Implants may eliminate the need for additional surgeries
  • Orbital Implants are custom, hand-crafted prosthesis by highly skilled ocularists (eye makers) to precisely match the look of your natural eye
  • Orbital Implants may appear as natural looking as your own eye
  • Dr. Cole has performed thousands of eye surgeries and he performs them regularly

ABOUT ARTIFICIAL ORBITAL EYE IMPLANTS:
Artificial eyes have been around for thousands of years, but the first orbital implants were developed only 100 years ago. These spheres were made of glass or gold and were later replaced by plastic or silicone spheres.  These first generation implants did not change until the HA (hydroxyapatite) implant was introduced in 1985 following years of research.  The problems with earlier artificial eyes included:

  • First generation implants could not deliver natural movement to the artificial eye
  • Lack of movement prevented a natural looking eye
  • First generation implants tended to drift (migrate) into the orbit
  • Drifting caused implant rejection by the bodies tissues
  • Rejection caused need for additional surgeries
  • All the above inspired researchers to search for a natural eye implant

HA (HYDROXYAPATITE) IMPLANTS, THE NATURAL CHOICE SINCE 1985
Ocean coral was discovered by researchers to be an all natural material remarkably similar to the structure of human bones. Through scientific modification of the coral mineral, to match that of human bone, hydroxyapatite was developed with these benefits:

  • HA equals the porous and the chemical structure of human bone
  • HA is naturally derived and accepted by the bodies tissues
  • HA once accepted and allows the tissue to grow into the implants
  • HA becomes a living body part

BIO-EYE HYDROXYAPATITE ORBITAL IMPLANTS
Released in 1989 by the FDA, Bio-Eye Implants are providing natural looking and natural acting eye movement to over 25,000 people worldwide!  Bio-Eye Orbital implants are the implants of choice among today’s leading Oculoplastic Surgeons.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What Exactly Does An Orbital Implant Do?
Orbital implants replace the volume in the orbit (bony cavity surrounding the eye) that was occupied by the eye. This implant is not visible, but instead it maintains and provides the natural structure of the orbit and support for the artificial eye.

What Is An Artificial Eye?
An artificial eye or prosthesis is used to restore the natural appearance of the eye and surrounding tissues.  They are usually made of plastic (acrylic) and are custom made by skilled ocularists (eye makers) to precisely match the look of the natural eye.

What Makes HA (Hydroxyapatite) So Effective?
The first HA orbital implant procedure was done in 1985, following years of research.
It is a naturally derived material which has been developed and remains a natural product that is accepted by the bodies tissues.  The implant actually becomes a living part of the body.

How Is The Procedure Done To Make This Implant The Most Effective?
Because HA is an all natural material accepted by the bodies tissues, the eye muscles can be attached directly to this implant allowing it to move within the orbit just like the natural eye.  Some of this movement is automatically transferred to the artificial eye which fits directly over the implant.  If greater movement is desired a peg can be used to connect the artificial eye the implant thus allowing even small darting eye movement.

Where Does Dr. Cole Perform Bio-Eye Implant Surgery?
Dr. Cole performs surgeries in his JCAHO surgical suite with the most advanced technologies available today. The suite is fully certified and provides for the same treatments and care as that in any hospital or out-patient surgery facility.

BOARD CERTIFICATION

Dr. Cole is a quadruple board certified surgeon which means he has met the rigorous high standards and training requirements of four medical boards.  This involved several years more of specialized training and experience in all four areas – in addition to medical school, internships, residencies, fellowship training and vast experience. Board certification does not guarantee a certain outcome, but it does ensure specialized training skill and expertise far beyond the norm.
